Minnesota Defeats Missouri 7-3

The Minnesota baseball team (17-9) defeated Missouri (15-17) 7-3 at Taylor Stadium on Tuesday, Apr. 7.
Minnesota had timely three-run homers in the second and the fifth, received a pair of solid outings from starter Austin Lubinsky (LaCrosse, Wis.) and reliever Luke Rasmussen (Northfield, Minn.) and made several outstanding defensive gems including three double plays.
Lubinsky pitched a career-high four innings, gave up four hits, one run, one walk and struck out one to get a no-decision. Rasmussen also pitched a career-high four innings, gave up three hits, walked one and struck out a batter to pick up his first win to move to 1-0.
Junior catcher Kyle Knudson (Maple Grove, Minn.) was 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs and three RBI, while freshman Justin Gominsky (Mahtomedi, Minn.) reached base twice, and was 1-for-3 with a run, three RBI and his first career home run. Eric Decker (Cold Spring, Minn.) was 2-for-5 with a run, a double and two stolen bases, while Nick O'Shea also went 2-for-5 with a run and a double.
Matt Nohelty (Rothschild, Wis.) finished 1-for-5 with an RBI on the night. With the hit, Nohelty extended his hitting streak to 15 games. He has also reached base in 42 straight games dating back to 2008.
Missouri got on the board first with a solo home run by Ryan Lollis to the start the game to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Minnesota moved ahead 3-1 with three runs in the top of the second inning. Knudson got things started with a single through the left side with one out, and moved to third on a single through the right side by O'Shea. With two outs, Gominsky crushed a 3-1 pitch over the right center field wall for his first career home run to give the Golden Gophers a two-run lead.
The Golden Gophers loaded the bases in the top of the fourth when O'Shea reached second on a throwing error by the pitcher, followed by Gominsky and Geason drawings walks. Ian Berger escaped the inning by striking out Nohelty for the third out of the inning.
Minnesota added to its lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead. Pettersen led off with an infield single that went of the glove of the pitcher, and was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice ground out. Kvasnicka followed with a single to right field to make it first and second with one out. Knudson delivered a three-run homer to center field to put the Golden Gophers on top 6-1.
Missouri added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth when Aaron Senne delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded to cut the Minnesota lead to 6-3. Junior Allen Bechstein prevented further damage when he struck out Greg Folgia with runners on first and third to end the inning.
The Tigers threatened in the bottom of the sixth when Conner Mach led off with a single and Trevor Coleman drew a walk. Luke Rasmussen (Northfield, Minn.) came in and got Steve Gray to line into a double play, and retired Kyle Mach on a ground out to end the inning.
Minnesota added an important insurance run in the top of the eighth inning to move its lead to 7-3. Decker led off the inning by ripping a double to right field. With one out, Decker stole third to collect his second stolen base of the game. Geason drew a walk, and Decker came home to score on a fielder's choice RBI by Nohelty.
Missouri loaded the bases with one out, but Rasmussen got back-to-back pop outs rom Kyle Mach and Rex Meyr to get out of the inning without any damage.
Tiger starter Ian Berger took the loss to fall to 2-3, as he gave up nine hits, six runs, walked two and struck out four in five innings of work.
Missouri was led by Lollis who was 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs and an RBI. Senne was also 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI.
Minnesota will finish up the abbreviated two-game series on Wednesday, Apr. 8 at 2:05 p.m. That game can be heard on KLBB (1220 AM).
