Future Gophers Compete at Junior Nationals

Two incoming University of Minnesota gymnasts took part in the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic National Championships in Cincinnati, Ohio recently.
The future Gophers’ competition at J.O. Nationals was higlighted by Josh Wokurka (Lombard, Ill.), who finished seventh in the all-around. Wokurka put together a total score of 173.800. There were 36 competitors who advanced to the finals of the all-around. In addition to his strong finish in the all-around Wokurka also reached the event finals on the floor exercise and high bar.
“Josh Wokurka had an outstanding competition,” Minnesota head coach Mike Burns said. “Finishing seventh in the all-around is very exciting for him and the Gopher program. By qualifying for the event finals on the floor exercise and the high bar, he has established himself
Meanwhile, Harris Coleman (Gainesville, Fla.) also competed at the Junior Olympic National Championships. Coleman struggled a bit in Cincinnati, but Burns said the future Gopher has a bright future.
“Harris Coleman ran into a few problems during the meet, but he is one of the best pommel horse workers in the country,” Burns said. “He will make a huge impact on our team next year on the horse and will also help out on several other events as well, including floor, high bar, parallel bars and vault.”
The Gophers finished eighth at the 2009 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships, held at the University of Minnesota’s Sports Pavilion.
