Gophers Complete Day One at Regionals

The University of Minnesota completed the first of the two-day Aramark South/Central Region Sprints in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Golden Gophers qualified the Varsity Four to the Grand Final, while the Gophers' First and Second Varsity Eight boats will compete in the Petite Final tomorrow morning on Melton Hill Lake.

Minnesota's Varsity Four of coxswain Monika Folker, Emily Johnson, Teresa Logemann, Tracy Merth and Kate Ladell finished second in their preliminary race to advance to the semifinals, beating Louisville and Texas and coming in behind Virginia. Minnesota’s time in the preliminary race was 7:16.21. In the semifinals, the Gophers again came in second, finishing the course in a time of 6:55.1 behind Ohio State, who finished in a time of 6:53.8. Minnesota finished ahead of Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa and Lousiville in the semifinal race. Tomorrow morning, the Varsity Four will compete in the Grand Final at 11:10 a.m. and will face Michigan, Clemson, Ohio State, Virginia and Notre Dame.

The Second Varsity Eight of coxswain Ilana Ostrin, Michele Peterson, Emily Baxter, Allison Fisher, Erin Desmond, Krystal Arbery, Tina Cho, Sarah Krueger and Molly Kalmoe at bow finished third in their morning heat behind Ohio State and Notre Dame to advance to the semifinals. Minnesota’s time in the preliminary race was 6:41.52. In the semifinals, the 2V8+ came in fifth, clocking a time of 6:28.6. Ohio State won the heat, finishing the course in a time of 6:14.5. On Sunday, the Second Varsity Eight will compete in the Petite Final at 11:20 a.m.

The Gophers' First Varsity Eight of coxswain Erica Niemiec, Lisa Pugh at stroke, Katherine Johnson, ashlee Vilmo, Stephanie Bakkum, Lucy Mulvey, Jenna Schuder, Sarah Graham and Cassie Drozynski at bow finished second in their morning heat behind Big Ten foe Michigan State. The Gophers clocked a time of 6:32.09 to the Spartans’ 6:25.8. Minnesota advanced to the semifinals, where they placed fourth with a time of 6:14.0. Michigan won the heat (6:04.4), Clemson finished second, Wisconsin was third, Notre Dame was fifth, and UCF came in sixth. The Gophers have advanced to the Petite Final tomorrow morning, and will race against Kansas State, Notre Dame, Louisville, Iowa and UCF at 11:40 a.m.
