Gophers Finish Sixth at Regional

The University of Minnesota completed the first of the two-day Aramark South/Central Region Sprints in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Golden Gophers finished sixth in the Central Region with three boats competing in finals today on Melton Hill Lake. All seven Big Ten teams finished among the top eight in the Central Region.

Minnesota's Varsity Four of coxswain Monika Folker, Emily Johnson, Teresa Logemann, Tracy Merth and Kate Ladell finished third in the Grand Final. Ohio State won the race in a time of 6:58.0, while Virginia was second, finishing in 6:59.3. The Gophers rounded out the top three, completing the race in a time of 7:00.6. Minnesota was faster than Clemson, Michigan and Notre Dame.

The Second Varsity Eight of coxswain Ilana Ostrin, Michele Peterson, Emily Baxter, Allison Fisher, Erin Desmond, Krystal Arbery, Tina Cho, Sarah Krueger and Molly Kalmoe at bow finished third in the Petite Final with a time of 6:31.6. Notre Dame was the winner (6:27.1) and Iowa was second (6:28.4). Tennessee was fourth, Texas finished fifth and Louisville was sixth.

The Gophers' First Varsity Eight of coxswain Erica Niemiec, Lisa Pugh at stroke, Katherine Johnson, ashlee Vilmo, Stephanie Bakkum, Lucy Mulvey, Jenna Schuder, Sarah Graham and Cassie Drozynski at bow finished third in today’s Petite Final. Iowa finished first in 6:11.7, Louisville was the runner up with a time of 6:13.7, while the Gophers clocked a time of 6:16.1. Rounding out the remaining competitors were UCF in fourth, Notre Dame in fifth and Kansas State in sixth.

Selections for the 2009 NCAA Rowing Championship will be announced on Tuesday, May 19.
