Minnesota added four athletes to its list of NCAA Midwest Region Championships qualifiers on Saturday as the Golden Gophers competed at the Hamline Meet of the Unsaintly in St. Paul. The Gophers won 13 events led by freshman Kylie Peterson, who captured the 100-meter dash title in regional qualifying time of 11.72 seconds, the fourth-fastest time in Minnesota history.
Nikki Tzanakis won the discus with a personal best and regional qualifying mark of 162 feet, 10 inches. The throw is the best by a Gopher this season.
Two other Gophers posted regional marks with second-place finishes: Jamie Dittmar in the 800 meters with a time of 2:09.50 and Amy Laskowske in the 5,000 meters in 16:43.16. Laskowske already owns an NCAA Championships provisional mark in the 10,000-meter run.
“The wind was a challenge today so it’s good to still be able to add some regional qualifiers,” said Golden Gopher head coach Matt Bingle. “Overall, we had a solid performance as a team today in what is our last true competition before the Big Ten meet in a couple weeks.”
In addition to Peterson’s performance in the 100 meters, another top sprint was turned in by Liz Roehrig in the 100-meter hurdles. Roehrig ran a personal best and matched the fourth-fastest time in Gopher history winning with a time of 14.00 seconds.
The local crowd enjoyed the chance to see Heather Dorniden run a pair of events. Dorniden won the 800 meters in 2:07.80 and anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay. Adrienne Thomas, Dittmar, Julie Schwengler and Dorniden clocked a time of 3:47.66.
Other champions on the track were Rikita Butler in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 55.10 seconds, Felicitias Mensing in the 1,500 meters in 4:35.12, Kelly Stalpes in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.50, Megan Duwell in the 5,000-meter run in 16:41.91 and the 4x100-meter relay of Chimerem Okoroji, Nyoka Giles, Chioma Omeoga and Peterson with a time of 46.95.
Winning field events for the Gophers were Alicia Rue in the pole vault with a height of 13-1 1/2, Christin Kingsley in the long jump with an effort of 18-3 1/4 and Caitlin Roemhildt in the high jump at 5-7 1/4.
