6/13/2009 12:00:00 AM | Men's Track & Field

Hassan Mead finished sixth in the 5,000-meter run to capture All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Mead’s finish along with Aaron Studt’s fifth-place in the shot put gives Minnesota a total of seven points in the national meet.

The race was run with a cautious pace at the start. A number of runners took turns at leading the pack. Mead hung consistently with the lead pack until the pack thinned out to single file with two laps remaining. Oregon Olympian Galen Rupp darted to the lead the 600 meters remaining and cruised to the title in 14:04.12, adding the 5,000 crown to the one he won on Thursday night in the 10,000 meters. Mead matched his sixth-place showing in the event from last year clocking a time of 14:09.87.

Mead completed an amazing sophomore season capturing All-America honors in both the indoor and outdoor 5,000 meters, as well as in cross country. He also won five Big Ten event titles in 2008-09.

The NCAA Championships concludes on Saturday.
