Junior second baseman Derek McCallum (Shoreview, Minn.) was named the District V Player of the Year according to an announcement by the NCBWA (National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America) on Friday, June 5.
McCallum is one of only nine players to be named an NCBWA District Player of the Year. He joins Mike Belfiore (Boston College), Jedd Gyorko (West Virginia), Kent Matthes (Alabama), Rick Poythress (Georgia), Alex Rendon (Rice), Bryan Marquez (New Mexico State), A.J. Morris (Kansas State) and Stephen Strasburg (San Diego State) on the list. District V included players from the states of Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.
Six of the District Players of the Year were position players, two were pitchers and Belfiore was a two-way player for Boston College. McCallum joined Gyorko, Poythress, Rendon and Marquez as one of five players who exclusively played infield, and was the only second baseman on the list. MCallum's 86 RBI tied for the highest total (along with Poythress) on the list with the other players on the list. He also collected the second-highest hit total with 95 (one behind Gyorko).
McCallum joins past District V Players of the Year Zach Putnam from Michigan (2007-08), Ronnie Bourquin from Ohio State (2006), Michigan's Chris Getz (2005), Seth Bynum from Indiana (2004), Ohio State's Scott Lewis (2003), Bryan Bullington from Ball State (2002) and Notre Dame's Aaron Heilman (2001) on the list. The District Player of the Year honors have been awarded since 2001.
Earlier this year, McCallum was named one of 16 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Award. McCallum joins Matthes, Poythress, Rendon, Marquez, Strasburg and Morris as one of seven District Players of the Year to be on the semifinalist list for the 2009 Dick Howser Trophy for Player of the Year. Finalists for Dick Howser Trophy will be announced on June 13 and presentation to the winner will come as part of the College Baseball Awards Show on July 2.
