Burns Blog: Day 2 in Dallas

We finally got the DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) schedule figured out and took the light rail over to the American Airlines center Tuesday for our second day of training at the competition venue. Kit Beikmann and Guillermo Alvarez got their finishing touches in as they prepared for the first day of competition which will begin at 7:00 pm Wednesday.
Kit went through his sequences on pommel horse. He has divided his routine into thirds and he was able to successfully complete each third of his routine during practice today. Kit added some difficulty to his routine after the NCAA Championships were over and I believe he currently has the highest start value in the meet on pommel horse. NCAA Champion Daniel Ribeiro may have the same start value and he too added some difficulty since NCAA's so it should be a great battle out there tomorrow night.
Guillermo hit 5 out of 6 events Tuesday - everything except rings. He did a great job on rings Monday and we decided to leave that event alone for Tuesday. He did a great Yurchenko double full on vault, probably his best whip to triple full on floor ever, and did a beautiful stalder to Tkatchev on the high bar along with some intricate pirouetting skills. Pommel horse was also an event he swung nicely on and had to make a few minor adjustments. Parallel bars was an event that needed some additional time and attention to detail, but I think we worked the bugs out here and should be ready to roll when the meet starts Wednesday night.
Tuesday night, we had our annual Elite Coaches Association meeting here at the hotel. This will be the first meeting of the association in about 5 years that I haven't run as the president of the association. I handed off the reigns of that position to Cal-Berkeley's assistant coach Aaron Floyd, so it will be nice to be sitting with the membership for a change rather than running the meeting.
The weather here in Dallas is HOT!!!! Yesterday it was over 100 degrees but today was a little nicer - I think it only hit about 94 degrees! A real cooling off trend I think!
More to come later. GO GOPHERS!
