Head coach Meg Stephenson has announced that Amber Hammerschmidt, a native of Rosemount, Minn., will join the Golden Gopher squad for the 2009-10 season. Hammerschmidt is a 2008 graduate of Rosemount High School, and competed for the Arizona State gymnastics team as a college freshman in 2008-09. She has signed an acceptance of admission form and will join the Gophers this fall as a sophomore.

“We are thrilled to add such an accomplished athlete to our team and see Amber helping us immediately on balance beam and potentially on floor and bars,” said Stephenson.

In her freshman season at Arizona State, Hammerschmidt competed on balance beam in nine meets, earning a season-high score of 9.80 twice. She also competed on bars in one meet, and was an exhibition performer on floor.

Hammerschmidt trained at Twin City Twisters as a Junior Olympic gymnast, and was a 2005 and 2006 Level 10 Junior Olympics National qualifier. She was named the 2006 Minnesota Junior Olympic Athlete of the Year.

In addition to her gymnastics background, Hammerschmidt performed for the Minnesota Dance Theater’s Nutcracker for five years as the Russian dancer at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Minneapolis.

Hammerschmidt is majoring in kinesiology and carries a minor in sociology. She is the daughter of Andy and Brenda Hammerschmidt and has an older sister, Ashley.

Minnesota will have five new gymnasts in 2009-10 as Hammerschmidt joins freshmen Jasmine Brown, Janell Campbell, Shannon Golich, and Jenny Weber as newcomers to the Golden Gopher team.
