The University of Minnesota wrestling team was represented today (Aug. 27) at the Minnesota State Fair by head coach J Robinson, senior Jayson Ness (Bloomington, Minn.) and junior Ben Berhow (Hayward, Minn.).
Golden Gophers public address announcer Dick Jonckowski hosted the half hour session, speaking with each Robinson, Ness and Berhow, before opening the floor for questions.
Robinson began by joking about his 24 years as head coach of the program, taking his position before either Ness or Berhow were born. He mentioned how over that time Minnesota joined the traditional powers of Iowa, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State as a consistent national title contender.
Robinson would go on to talk about the high expectations for the Golden Gophers this season, as they strive to return to the top of both the Big Ten and NCAA standings.
In his time, Ness talked about his career thus far and his goal of becoming a national champion in his senior season. He also answered the questions about his most memorable match, recalling the national semifinals in 2008 - his sophomore season - when he recorded a late takedown for the win.
Jonckowski also spoke with Berhow about his goals this season, as well as his successful high school career. Like Ness, Berhow's goals included Big Ten and National titles.
Before wrapping up the day, Jonckowski had a quick trivia questions for the crowd, asking who was the first four-time All-American in Gopher Wrestling - and University of Minnesota - history. One lucky fan shouted out the correct answer of Chad Kraft, and walked away with a University of Minnesota backpack.
