Wold Finishes Fifth In 400 Free At U.S. Open

Senior Alex Wold finished fifth in the 400-meter freestyle Thursday night at the U.S. Open in Federal Way, Wash. The Wayata, Minn. native also helped the Minnesota 800-meter freestyle relay team take runner-up honors as well on the third night of competition at the Open. In the team competition, Minnesota Aquatics stands third with 138 points, just 10 points from leader Tuscon Ford Dealers Aquatics.
Wold has finaled in all three of his individual events at the meet to this point and broke three school long course records in the process. In the 400 free, Wold finished fifth with a personal-best time of 3:51.97. Mission Viejo's Chad LaTourette won in 3:48.26. Gopher incoming freshman Michael McBroom also made a 20th place showing with a time of 3:58.02. Another freshman, Matt Benecki, placed 58th in 4:08.39.
Wold's school record swim of the night came in leading off the 800-meter free relay in the final event of the day. Wold led off in 1:49.60, breaking Justin Mortimer's 2004 time of 1:49.91. Curt Carlson, Steve Miller and Mark Solfelt swam the other legs of the relay that finished in a school record 7:25.86. Tuscon Ford Dealers Aquatics took the gold medal in 7:18.82.
In the other event of the day, Kevin Baseheart placed 33rd in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 54.98.
