Gophers Swept by North Dakota

10/16/2010 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

For the first time since 2007, the No. 3/4 University of Minnesota women's hockey team was swept at home at the hands of No. 7/8 University of North Dakota tonight at Ridder Arena.

With a score of 3-1 tonight and a 4-3 defeat last night, it was the first time since Jan. 5-6, 2007 (Wisconsin) that the Golden Gophers were swept in their own building. Prior to this weekend's sweep, the Golden Gophers had not been swept at home for 26 consecutive series.

UND got on the board early when Monique Lamoureux-Kolls scored at 3:36 in the first period on a four-on-four attempt when she fired a shot, top-shelf, for the goal. Kelly Terry knotted the game at 1-1 when she scored her second goal in two games at 7:32 in the first period. The assists went to Sarah Davis and Becky Kortum. UND's Sara Dagenais scored at 10:12 to regain the lead with a single assist from Jocelyne Lamoureux.

The two teams went scoreless in the second period. Minnesota only allowed two shots on goal to its 12 to hold a 21-13 advantage in the shot category. UND had a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity for 1:45, but the Gophers allowed just one shot on goal during that span. UND's second came with a minute left in the period.

The Sioux added to their lead when Dagenais netted her second goal of the game at 3:55 in the third. The Gophers only had three shots in the third to UND's five with one shot ringing off the crossbar.

Alyssa Grogan was in net for the Gophers and had 15 saves. Stephanie Ney was in net for UND and had 23 saves as well as being named the No. 1 star.

Minnesota will look to return to the win column next weekend when it travels to St. Cloud, Minn., to face St. Cloud State Friday and Saturday night. Both games will be played at 7:07 p.m., at the National Hockey Center.
