The No. 7/8 University of Minnesota women's hockey team had scoring from four different individuals and Becky Kortum netted her first multiple-goal game of her career in a 5-0 win over St. Cloud State, tonight in St. Cloud, Minn.
Minnesota scored two goals in the first period when Sarah Davis and Anne Schleper scored to put the game at 2-0 after one. Davis scored her first goal as a Golden Gopher when she capitalized on a power-play goal at 5:36 in the first with the assists from Schleper and Mira Jalosuo. Schleper scored a goal of her own at 11:35 in the first when she used a wrist shot at the top of the right circle for her second goal of the season. Amanda Kessel and Kelly Seeler tallied the assists.
Becky Kortum then found the net twice in the second period when she scored back-to-back goals at 4:31 and 10:42 in the second to put the game at 4-0 after two. Kortum scored the first on the power play (assists from Schleper and Kelly Terry). Her second came on a rebound attempt when she picked up the puck in front of the net, turned to the net and lifted it high for her fourth goal of the season. Her two goals became a new career high for the sophomore from Minnetonka, Minn. Again, Schleper and Terry assisted as the Gophers just came off the power play and SCSU was not able to change from the penalty kill.
After setting up two, Terry scored her own as she used her rebound attempt to score her third goal in three games at 6:22 in the third. Laura May had the initial shot and was credited the first assist, while Davis tallied the second.
With her four points on the night, Schleper tied a career high, four points. Seeler and Jalosuo each tallied their first point of the season. Noora Raty was in net for the Golden Gophers and she stopped 14 shots on goal. Raty has yet to allow a goal this season and now sits at 3-0-0 on the season.
The Gophers will look for the series sweep tomorrow at 7:07 p.m. at the National Hockey Center.
