Gophers Conclude Fall Season in Iowa

The University of Minnesota rowing team split squads with some of the members of the varsity and novice teams competing at the Head of the Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Minnesota competed in the Varsity Eight, Varsity Four and Novice Eight competitions.

The Gophers had two boats in the Varsity Eight competition. Minnesota's boat of Sara Baldvins as the coxswain, Christine Beauparlant at stroke, Becky Kinchen, Sarah Krueger, Kayla Thom, Leah Rogotzke, Debbie Brzozowski, Kate Ladell, Ellen Hughes at bow finished sixth in a time of 13:59.514. Minnesota's B boat of Nicolle Fisher as the coxswain, Maddy Bourgeois at stroke, Sarah Sobek, Arielle Flynn, Ali Haws, Caitlin Boon, Allison Putlak, Alexandria Voss and Katie Anderson at bow followed in eighth place (14:22.398). Wisconsin won the event in 13:19.405.

In Varsity 4+ competition, Minnesota had three boats and placed ninth, 12th and 15th overall. Finishing ninth overall was Sara Balvins, Christine Beauparlant, Debbie Brzozowski, Sarah Krueger and Becky Kinchen in a time of 15:43.693. In 12th was Adriana Gutierrez, Kayla Thom, Leah Rogotzke, Maddy Bourgeois and Kate Ladell in 16:01.957. Following in 15th and in a time of 16:25.973 was Emilie Sabourin, Alexandria Voss, Ali Haws, Arielle Flynn and Allison Putlak.

In novice action the Gophers had three boats and finished third, seventh and ninth overall. Minnesota's Novice A boat of Megan Morris as the coxswain, Nicolette Marquardt at stroke, Sarah Sobek, Ellen Hughes, Katherine Windsor, Amelia Black, Katrina Becker, Melissa Drezdzon and Molly Gruber at bow finished third overall in a time of 15:02.663. Finishing in seventh overall and in a time of 15:45.938 was coxswain Jordan Weizhaar at Kathryn DeSmidt stroke, Katherine Moran, Cameo Kale, Cassandra Meyer, Anne Biehl, Mackenzie Zimmerman, Chelsea Miller, Meredith Hilgeman. The Gophers followed with a ninth-place finish in a time of 16:30.202. In the Gopher boat was coxswain Olivia Vlahos, Jen Kohl at stroke, Erica Revering, McKenzie Fitzgerald, Emily Smoter, Rebecca Curtis, Deena Altschwager, Kelly Brickl and Emily Karp at bow.

"We had a solid day of racing across the board," assistant coach Becca Carlton said. "The athletes have made a lot of progress over the last eight weeks and I think that showed today."
