University of Minnesota women's hockey forward Amanda Kessel was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's Rookie of the Week after an outstanding weekend at then-No. 7 Clarkson.

In her opening weekend of collegiate play, Kessel netted three goals and assisted on another three to put up six points against the Golden Knights. In her first game as a Golden Gopher last Friday (Oct. 1), Kessel tallied four points. Scoring two goals en route to a 5-0 win, Kessel also set up Jen Schoullis’ power-play, game-winning goal. Then on Saturday (Oct. 2), Kessel scored the game-winning goal to lead the Gophers to a 3-0 victory. She also tallied another assist on Megan Bozek’s power-play goal Saturday for a six-point weekend. The freshman from Madison, Wis., had 13 shots and was a +4 in her Gopher debut.

Kessel and the rest of the Golden Gophers will face the Minnesota Whitecaps in an exhibition game Friday (6 p.m.), while facing Wayne State Saturday at 2 p.m. The game against the Whitecaps is free admission, while the Wayne State game is a regular season game. Tickets for the WSU game can be purchased on gophersports.com.
