Three Gophers Swim in Grand Prix Finals Tonight

Minnesota performed well in Friday’s prelims, the first session of the USA Swimming Minnesota Grand Prix. The Gophers saw three swimmers advance to championship finals, where they will have the opportunity to show their skill against some of the best talent in the world. Tonight’s finals begin at 7 p.m. in the University Aquatic Center.
The marquee events for the Gophers in tonight’s finals will be the 100-yard breaststroke and the 100 butterfly.
Sophomore Josh Hall and senior Ivan Gutesa will compete in a loaded championship final in the 100 breast. Hall qualified with the sixth-fastest time in prelims, 56.31 seconds. Gutesa is seeded seventh in the final after swimming a time of 56.47 in the prelims. The championship final lineup included three-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte and former Gopher All-American David Plummer.
Minnesota’s sensational freshman Kyler Van Swol will compete against two Olympians, Lochte and Ricky Behrens, in the championship final of the 100 fly. Van Swol swam the sixth-fastest time in prelims of 49.03 seconds.
Curt Carlson swam the ninth-fastest prelim time (1:39.36) in the 200 free just missing out on the championship final. He will compete in the consolation final.
