Niklas “Nik” Brinck, of Nixa, Mo., has signed a National Letter of Intent to swim at the University of Minnesota, Golden Gopher coaches Dennis Dale and Bill Tramel announced. Brinck will join the program for the 2011-12 season.

A senior at Nixa High School, Brinck is a two-time Missouri state champion winning crowns in the 100 freestyle as a sophomore (2008) and junior (2009) and the 100 backstroke as a senior (2010). He is coached by Jason Hite. Brinck also competes for the Springfield Aquatics Club under the direction of Brian Reynolds.

Brinck owns top times of 20.74 seconds in the 50 free, 45.24 in the 100 free and 50.76 in the 100 back.

“Nik Brinck will be the next great Missouri swimmer to swim at Minnesota,” said Tramel. “We have a long history of signing any Missouri swimmer who is talented enough to compete at Minnesota.

“I am a St. Louis native, so I consider Missouri my backyard,” Tramel added. “I love Minnesota and want to bring as many guys from my home state to Minneapolis as possible. Talent such as Mike Woodson (Parkway South in St. Louis), who anchored our 400 freestyle relay to the Big Ten title in 2007; Travis Beckerle (DeSmet in St. Louis), who was one of our greatest distance swimmers ever and a multi-time All-American; and current junior Zach Bolin (Blue Springs outside of Kansas City), who was part of our 1-2-3 Big Ten Conference sweep of the 100 freestyle last year top the list.

“All these guys were Missouri state champions who went on to even more greatness at Minnesota. I have no reason to believe Nik will be any different. He comes from a swimming family. His father, Per, was a great swimmer for Drury. The thing that set Nik apart in the recruiting process was how he talked about doing things. He wants it. Coupled with his talent and working with our sprint coach Dennis Dale, Nik will shine at Minnesota.”
