Gophers Face Iowa, North Carolina in Weekend Duals

The Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team is slated to host a pair of dual meets this weekend. On Friday, Nov. 5, the Golden Gophers take on Big Ten rival Iowa at 5 p.m. Then on Saturday, Nov. 6, North Carolina comes to town for a 12 p.m. meet. Both co-ed meets will be at the University Aquatic Center. Admission is free.

Minnesota is off to a 1-0 record after defeating Wisconsin last weekend. The Gophers won nine of 16 events with Ivan Gutesa (100y breast, 200y breast), Matt Benecki (500y free, 1,000y free) and Zach Bolin (100y free, 100y back) all capturing multiple titles in individual events. Gutesa was honored as the Big Ten Co-Swimmer of the Week.

“We have set a really big challenge for our team this weekend first facing Iowa on Friday and then North Carolina, the power of the ACC on Saturday,” said Golden Gopher head coach Dennis Dale. “This double dip poses the biggest dual-meet challenge for our program in 10 years.”

Iowa is 3-0 heading into Friday’s dual meet. The Hawkeyes are 2-0 in the Big Ten duals including a 181-119 victory over Michigan State two weeks ago in East Lansing, Mich. This Big Ten matchup should pose more of a threat to Iowa.

“We get an opportunity to have our second Big Ten meet on the road,” said Iowa Head Coach Marc Long. “Going into a place where we are clearly the underdogs, it will be good for our team to face very strong Minnesota team.”

A top race against Iowa could be the 50-yard freestyle and the battle between Iowa junior Ryan Phelan and Gopher senior All-American Michael Richards. Both were close to NCAA “B” qualifying times in the season’s opening weeks.

The last time the Gophers saw the Tar Heels was at the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, last spring. Minnesota placed 14th in the championships, while North Carolina finished right behind Minnesota in 15th place.

At the NCAA meet, the Gophers and Tar Heels met head-to-head in two relays, the 400 free relay and the 800 free relay. In Saturday’s meet, we could see rematch of virtually the same swimmers. In the 400-yard freestyle relay the entire Gopher foursome which placed seventh returns in Michael Richards, Curt Carlson, Kevin Baseheart and Bolin. The Tar Heels finished 11th in the relay and have three members back in Tommy Wyher, Evan Reed and Steve Cebertowicz.

Another race to watch will be the 100 butterfly where an interesting battle could feature UNC All-American Wyher (fifth in 2010 NCAAs) against Gopher NCAA participant Kevin Baseheart and talented Minnesota rookie Kyler Van Swol.

The Tar Heels are 3-0 in dual meets this season. Last week, North Carolina beat ACC rival Maryland by a score of 165-121.
