Gopher Golf Program to Hold Day Camp

The University of Minnesota Golf programs announced plans today for the first annual Gopher Golf Day Camp. Hosted by Director of Golf John Harris, Associate Men's Head Coach John Carlson and Director of Instruction Ernie Rose, the Gopher Day Camp is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Gibson-Nagurski Indoor Football Complex. Cost is $95 for the three-hour camp.
The Gopher Golf Day Camp will give players the opportunity to work on all aspects of their golf game during the winter months. The camp will be broken up into three, hour long sessions. Highlights include:
*Chance to work with University of Minnesota Golf Coaches
*Chance to with the coaches on your own unique golf swing
*Instructors will cover basic instruction, video analysis, equipment evaluation for each player, short game instruction, golf specific fitness and nutrition
*Experience college golf atmosphere and have the opportunity to use the University of Minnesota golf facilities during the camp

Director of Golf John Harris - Harris turned pro in 1976, the same year that he accomplished his finest finish on the PGA Tour, a tie for 26th finish at the Hawaiian Open. Three years later Harris and Bill Homeyer started the Harris-Homeyer Insurance Company, now a part of Stanton Group, where he was Principle Executive for more than 30 years.
A native of Roseau, Minn., Harris originally came to the University of Minnesota in the fall of 1971 to play for legendary head coach Herb Brooks on a hockey scholarship. A four-year letterwinner, he played in 110 career games on the ice, tallying 56 points on 21 goals and 35 assists. Harris finished his senior season as the Gophers' second leading scorer to help lead the "U" to its first college hockey National Championship with a 4-2 victory over Michigan Tech at the Boston Garden.
Harris also excelled on the links while at Minnesota. A four-year letterwinner on the golf team as well, Harris played in three NCAA Championships and finished 17th at the 1973 event. He was named an All-American following the 1973 and '74 seasons and also garnered first team All-Big Ten honors both years.
A member of the University of Minnesota 'M' Club Hall of Fame and the Minnesota Golf Hall of Fame, Harris was a part of the 1972 Gopher squad that took home the Big Ten title and finished his career with the 1974 Big Ten individual title as well as the Les Bolstad award, given to the conference player with the lowest season average.
Harris regained his amateur status in 1983 and went on to capture numerous championships within the Minnesota borders as well as national tournaments, including the 1993 U.S. Amateur, the 1995 Sunnehanna Amateur as well as four Minnesota State Mid-Amateur and three Minnesota State Amateur titles.
Harris' next accomplishment came along with his 50th birthday, as he became a member of the PGA's Champions Tour. He played eight seasons on tour and captured his first win in 2006 at the Commerce Bank Championship with a 54-hole score of 11-under par 202.
Associate Head Coach John Carlson - a native of Bagley, Minn., comes to the University of Minnesota after a three-year stint as an assistant golf professional at Wayzata Country Club in Wayzata, Minn. Prior to that, Carlson spent five years playing professional on the Nationwide and NGA Tours, winning 14 career titles. He also won back-to-back Tapemark Charity Pro-Am titles while at Wayzata CC.
A four-year letterwinner at the University of Wisconsin, Carlson won three collegiate events as a Badger and earned Academic All-Big Ten all four years.
Director of Instruction Ernie Rose - Rose, an assistant coach for the Gopher women this past season, turned pro in 2001 following a junior college and Division I career. He won 10 individual titles as a member of the Midland Junior College golf team and was named a Division I NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) First Team All-American in 2000. Rose also represented Midland Junior College in the World University Games in Northern Ireland following the 2000 season. He finished his collegiate career at the University of South Carolina.
A native of Melbourne, Australia, Rose started his professional career on the PGA Tour of Australasia and has also participated in the Tightlies Tour, The Hooter's Tour, the Greygoose Tour, the Tarheel Tour, the Dakota's Tour and the U.S. Pro Golf Tour since turning pro in 2001.
