North Carolina Edges Minnesota in Dual Meet

North Carolina led by a slim 3-point lead heading into the relay. The Tar Heels’ led-off swimmer Rebecca Kane provided the Tar Heels a slight lead. Minnesota’s foursome of Hannah Whitehead, Meagan Radecke, Marissa Davies and Erin Caflisch managed to erase the advantage. Caflisch was able to take a small lead in the third length but Tar Heel anchor Stephanie Peacock used a great turn on the final lap to take the lead down the stretch. North Carolina won in 3:22.91, while Minnesota clocked a time of 3:23.64, an NCAA “B” qualifier.
The Tar Heels used a top-two finish in the 200 individual medley to take the team lead heading into the relay. Minnesota had grabbed a 136-128 lead after Kaylee Jamison won the 100 butterfly in 54.96.
Minnesota won seven of the 16 meets. The 200 medley relay of Hannah Whitehead, Jillian Tyler, Kaylee Jamison and Meagan Radecke kicked off the meet with a victory, swimming a time of 1:41.29. Ashley Steenvoorden kept the ball rolling with a win on the 1,000 free with a time of 9:48.90.
Gopher junior Kelci Bryant, the defending 3-meter diving national champion, saw her first action of the season on the 1-meter board. Bryant won with a score of 306.75. She did not compete in the 3-meter event against North Carolina.
Tyler added another 100 breast title to her resume, winning in 1:00.38. Spencer was second in the event with a time of 1:01.84, her first NCAA “B” qualifier of the season. Tyler added a double in the 200 breast in 2:13.94. Spencer won the race, but was disqualified for an illegal stroke. The DQ did not affect the eventual outcome of the event. Had Spencer’s win counted, the Gophers still would have lost by two points.
Molly Belk won an exciting race in the 200 butterfly, out-reaching UNC’s Laura Moriarty at the wall. Belk clocked a season-best time 2:00.81, seven-hundreds of a second (0.07) ahead of Moriarty.
