Postgame Quotes
Minnesota 63, Southern 48
December 9, 2010
Minneapolis, Minn.
Minnesota Head Coach Pam Borton
Opening statement:
“We had 24 turnovers for the game. We were just glad to come out of that performance with a win. We need to do a better job taking care of the ball and having a better flow on offense. It’s a good thing we shot the ball better in the second half. These games are supposed to be fun and give our young players a chance to play to give our starters a bit of a break from the amount of minutes they played today.”
On how to cut down turnovers:
“I think we were making things a bit more difficult than it needed to be. They were in a 1-3-1 defense and we made it harder on ourselves. We needed to move the ball. We needed to get the ball in the middle of the floor.”
On Leah Cotton’s recent play:
“She’s an aggressive player. On the ball reversal, she just saw seams and attacked and was very successful getting to the rim and hitting pull ups. She kept us alive and afloat in the first half.”
Minnesota Player Quotes
Leah Cotton
On why she has improved since last season:
“Honestly, confidence is the main thing. Last year I didn’t really believe in myself. This year, it’s a completely different thing and I have a completely different role.
On other areas she can improve:
“There are always things to improve on. I can definitely improve on my defense and improve my stamina, as well as protecting the ball.”
Kiara Buford
On her first half:
“Turnovers. China [Antoine] and I set the tone for our offense, either good or bad. You just have to let it go and move on and still make sure your team comes out with the win.”
Southern University Associate Head Coach Carlos Funchess
Opening statement:
“I thought tonight we did a pretty good job executing. We had a lot of open shots, and really did not get them to fall, but I thought we played pretty hard. I think the fans are pretty happy with the effort we gave coming up here.”
On the team’s game plan:
“We wanted to switch it up a little, played some man-to-man and then some zone—what we call our hurricane defense, lots of switching. I think we kind of confused [Minnesota] and it worked for us, especially early in the game. I thought their coaching staff did a good job of making some adjustments in the second half. We did cause some turnovers and that allowed us to score a few more points.”
