The horizontal bar will be an event to watch all season long for the 2011 University of Minnesota men's gymnastics team.
The Gophers will be looking to use the horizontal bar to finish each meet strong by putting on a spectacular display of athletic ability.
Several of last season's top competitors have graduated, but the Gophers will still be looking for a big year from several returning athletes.
Sophomore Harris Coleman is expected to be a top athlete as he has continued show progress on the horizontal bar throughout the offseason. Fellow sophomore Josh Wokurka is also expected be a key contributor on the horizontal bar as it was one of his best events when he was junior national finalist his senior year of high school.
Junior DJ Repp has also looked outstanding in the event for Minnesota in the offseason and is looking to become a team anchor on the horizontal bar.
Several other upper-classmen are expected to be solid contributors, including Michael Hillin, Ross Cameratta and Ali Aleiou. Minnesota will also be looking to freshmen Matt Frey and Justin Morinishi to step up and compete in the high bar event.
"The horizontal bar is easily the most exciting event with the release moves and big dismounts," Burns said. "We lost a lot on this event but we're doing a good job of replacing the lost talent. Coleman has been looking great for us. Workurka will also be a top competitor there as he has a lot of potential. Hillin is one of our most exciting guys on the high bar, and Repp is looking like our best guy in the event right now."
