Gopher Gymnastics Floor Exercise Preview

12/31/2010 12:00:00 AM | Gymnastics

Today we look at what to expect from the Golden Gopher floor exercise competitors in 2011 in preparation for the start of the season tomorrow. Minnesota starts the 2011 season on New Year’s Day with an exhibition competition, the annual Intrasquad Meet. Admission is free, and the Gophers would love to see all their fans at the Sports Pavilion at 6 p.m.

Coach Meg Stephenson is really excited about the floor exercise performers this year. “Traditionally, Minnesota has been very strong on floor, but that hasn’t been our best event the last couple of years,” explained Stephenson. “I think we’re on track to getting back to where we were a few years ago.”

Every returning floor performer has upgraded her routine with notable upgrades in tumbling, giving the Gophers higher scoring potential. Among the returners on floor are Janell Campbell, Shannon Golich, Kendra Elm, Ana Balboa, Lucy Ennis, Amber Hammerschmidt and Briana Jones. Not all of those gymnasts competed last season, but each is capable of making the line up this year. Each competitor has a cleaner and more consistent routine.

In addition, three juniors and all the freshmen have had new floor routines choreographed for this year. “Our fans will get to see a great variety of choreography,” said Stephenson. “We have unique and very cool choreography and there’s a wide variety of styles and music.”

Among the freshmen, Kayla Slechta and Dusti Russell have stood out for their beautiful dance abilities. Both Kayla and Dusti are also in the mix to make the line up on floor this season.
