Terry and Kessel Lead Gophers to 6-2 Win

12/4/2010 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

Kelly Terry had a career-high four points, while Amanda Kessel had three to lead the No. 7 University of Minnesota women's hockey team to a 6-2 win over Bemidji State University, today at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 11-6-0 overall and 6-6-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

With the win, the Gophers split the series, after rebounding from a 2-0 loss yesterday. After getting shut out the day before, Minnesota opened the floodgates early and often in the series finale, scoring three goals within 1:05 of each other. Sarah Davis scored the Gophers' first of three goals in the first period. Davis tried putting the puck on net. It went off BSU's Montana Vichorek skate and past goalie Zuzana Tomcikova at 13:34 in the first. The assists went to Kelly Terry and Mira Jalosuo.

Amanda Kessel and Sarah Erickson connected to score a four-on-four goal a minute later at 14:34. Erickson was in the Minnesota zone and found Kessel all alone at the BSU blue line. She skated in on a breakaway and went from forehand to backhand and deked Tomcikova for her sixth goal of the season. Terry added a goal just five seconds later when she scored off the faceoff when Sarah Davis won it. With the three goals allowed,

Minnesota knocked out starting goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova. Minnesota scored three goals on 10 shots, while allowing just four shots on goal to BSU.

Minnesota lit the lamp twice in the second period as Megan Bozek and Jen Schoullis each scored at 5:34 and 15:01. Bozek scored just inside the blue line as Terry and Jalosuo added the assists. Jen Schoullis scored her fifth goal of the season at 15:01, with Kessel and Kelly Seeler adding the assists. Emily Erickson got the Beavers on the board at 1:34 in the third period. However, Anne Schleper put the game back to a five-goal deficit when she scored a power-play goal at 10:21 in the third. Annie Bauerfeld scored to put the game at 6-2 after Erin Cody set her up at 17:20 for the scoring final.

Minnesota went one-for-three on the power play, while holding BSU scoreless with the extra attacker in four attempts. Minnesota scored six goals on 28 shots, while BSU had two goals on 21 shots.

The Gophers host Ohio State, next weekend. Friday's game is set for 6 p.m., while Saturday's game is at 2:07 p.m.
