Studt Tops Gophers at Iowa State Classic

Aaron Studt landed a personal best by over two feet in the weight throw placing second at the Iowa State Classic with an effort of 69 feet, 7 1/2 inches. Studt’s throw is an NCAA provisional qualifier and the second-best throw in Minnesota history, less than an inch off the Adam Schnaible’s record of 69-8 1/4 from 2008.

Tyler Kleinhuizen joined the Gophers’ top-10 list in the weight throw as well with his heave of 58-11 1/4.  Kleinhuizen placed 15th.

The Gophers’ distance medley relay of Paul Hilsen, Joe McFarland, Andy Richardson and Matt Volz placed fourth in a time of 9 minutes, 59.50 seconds.

True freshman Cameron Boy added his name to the Gophers’ top-10 list in the 200-meter dash clocking a time of 21.86 seconds. Boy finished 11th.

In the long jump, Joey Schwecke was seventh tying her indoor personal best with a leap of 23-2. Brock Spandl was ninth with a career best of 23-0 1/2.

The Iowa State Classic concludes on Saturday.

Minnesota also sent several distance runners to the Husky Classic at the University of Washington. In the 5,000-meter run contested on Friday, Mike Torchia ran a time of 14:18.89, Matt Barrett a time of 14:23.47 and Pieter Gagnon at time of 14:27.33.
