Distance Runners Hit NCAA Provisional Times

The Minnesota women’s track & field team added three distance runners to its list of NCAA provisional qualifiers on Saturday in the final day of the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. Amy Laskowske run her second-fastest 5,000 meters of her career to place third in a provisional qualifying time of 16 minutes, 25.12 seconds to top the Gopher performances.
Megan Duwell finished fifth in the race and clocked a time of 16:30.50, an NCAA provisional qualifier and the second-fastest time in Gopher history.
Nikki Swenson added her NCAA provisional time in the mile run, finishing second with a time of 4:42.53, the fifth-best time in school history.
Rikita Butler enjoyed a sensational meet in the sprints. Butler placed third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.84 seconds, the third-best time in Minnesota women’s track history. On Friday, she clocked her career best and the fifth-best time in school history in the 200 meters at 24.53 seconds. Butler concluded the meet helping the Gopher 4x400-meter relay to a second-place finish in a time of 3:42.74. She was joined by Kelly Stalpes, Chioma Omeoga and Alena Brooks on the relay.
Kylie Peterson added a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash clocking a time of 7.50 seconds. She ran the same time in her preliminary heat.
The Gophers had several athletes, some who competed Friday at Iowa State, travel to River Falls, Wis., to compete in the Brooks Classic. Minnesota collected five event titles, two by DeAnne Hahn in the throwing events.
Hahn won the weight throw with a toss of 60-11 1/4, then captured the win in the shot put with a season-best throw of 47-1. Caty Dongoske was second in both events, with a throw of 52-0 1/2 in the weight and 44-9 in the shot put.
Other Gophers winning Brooks Classic titles were Emily Betz in the long jump (18-0 1/2), Ashley Deisting in the 800 meters (2:21.01) and Anna Johnson in the 600 meters (1:40.90).
