Minnesota Drops Home Finale to Michigan

2/26/2010 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

Despite a season-high six three-point field goals from Katie Ohm, Minnesota dropped its home finale to Michigan, 65-54, in Williams Arena. Ohm scored 18 points to lead the Golden Gophers, who fall to 13-15 overall (6-11 Big Ten).

For the second straight game, the Gophers hit the ground running taking a 13-0 lead 3 1/2 minutes into the contest. Ohm made two three-pointers and Ashley Ellis-Milan added two baskets.

Michigan (15-12, 7-10) came up empty in its first five possessions before Dayeesha Hollins grabbed a steal that resulted in a three-pointer by Carmen Reynolds at the 15:48 mark. It only seems fitting that Hollins, a 5-7 freshman guard, would jump start the Wolverines. She would become the game’s key player down the line, finishing with a career-high 27 points.

The Gophers’ offense seemed to be in sync for the game’s first 13 minutes. Minnesota was shooting over 40 percent from the field, Ohm already had three triples and Brittany McCoy had picked up six assists. A Kiara Buford three-pointer with 7:09 left in the first half gave the Gophers their biggest lead of the game at 15 points, 27-12.

Then the momentum slowly shifted Michigan’s direction. Minnesota went scoreless for nearly five minutes and the Gopher offense never really recovered. Michigan cut the Gopher lead to single digits, nine points at 33-24, with a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Krista Phillips to end the first half.

Minnesota started the second half very slowly. On the other hand, Michigan used a 9-0 run to tie the score at 33-33 before the Gophers managed to score their first points of the half. McCoy finally broke the ice with two free throws at the 15:43 mark to ignite a 3-minute stretch that featured two more Ohm trifectas and rebuilt Minnesota’s lead to nine points at 48-39.

Over the next 10 minutes, Michigan before some hot long-range shooting out-scored the Gophers by a 20-2 margin. Veronica Hicks hit four three-pointers in the stretch, her final trey at the 1:54 mark giving Michigan an insurmountable 15-point lead.

The Gophers shot 24.0 percent in the second half after a respectable 46.4 percent outing in the first half.

Ohm was joined in double figures by Buford with 11 points and Ellis-Milan with 10. McCoy finished with nine assists, surpassing the 500 career assist mark along the way.

Minnesota concludes its regular season on Sunday at Michigan State. Game time is 1 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast live by the Big Ten Network.
