Gophers Fall at Michigan Sunday

2/7/2010 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

Minnesota lost its sixth consecutive game falling 74-40 at Michigan. The Golden Gophers (11-12, 4-8) did not have a single player score in double figures. China Antoine led the Gophers with seven points.

Michigan (14-9, 6-7) breaks an eight-game losing streak to Minnesota, a streak that had been the Gophers longest current winning streak over a Big Ten opponent.

The Wolverines set the pace in the first half by making five of their first seven three-point field goal attempts. Two of the triples came from 6-6 senior center Krista Phillips, who went 5-for-5 from the floor, 3-of-3 from three for 13 points. The Gophers struggled from the get-go to keep within striking distance. Minnesota was hampered by 15 first-half turnovers and a 33.3 percent field goal percentage in the opening half.

Still, a buzzer-beating lay-up by Brianna Mastey closed the Gophers to within 29-23 at halftime.

It was the opening minutes of the second half that hurt the Gophers. Michigan ran off nine straight points in the first 4 1//2 minutes to start the period and continued to build on their lead by shooting 73.9 percent in the second half alone.

The Gophers managed just 17 second-half points, making just 6-of-36 from the field. The Minnesota bench outscored the starters by a 22-18 margin.

Michigan forward Carmen Reynolds scored 14 points in the second half to finish the game with a  game-high 19 points.

Minnesota’s next game is at Penn State on Thursday, Feb. 11.
