Duwell, Dorniden, Laskowske Earn Academic Honors

NCAA cross country All-American Megan Duwell was one of three Minnesota women’s cross country student-athletes named All-Academic by the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday. Duwell was joined on the national honor squad by teammates Heather Dorniden and Amy Laskowske.
The award honors those student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. To be eligible for the award a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average and must finish among the top 15 finishers (or top 10 percent) of the field at their respective NCAA regional meet. Overall, 104 student-athletes were honored from 57 schools around the country. The Big Ten tied with the Big 12 and the BIG EAST for the most honorees by conference with 15 representatives apiece.
Duwell, a senior from West Bend, Wis., captured her second All-America honor at last fall’s NCAA Cross Country Championships. Her seventh-place finish overall was the highest by a Golden Gopher at the national meet. Duwell is a business major.
Dorniden collected All-NCAA Midwest Region honors last fall in her final season of competition with the Gophers. During her track career, Dorniden won a Minnesota-best nine career All-America honors. Dorniden, an Inver Grove Heights, Minn., native, graduated in December with a kinesiology degree.
Laskowske also earned All-NCAA Midwest Region accord last fall, her senior season in cross country. She is a global studies major from Palatine, Ill.
The Gopher trio helped Minnesota to a 10th-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Championships, Minnesota’s fifth-consecutive top-12 team showing at the national meet. Only one other school, Big Ten rival Illinois, can match that current streak of success.
