Minnesota senior Megan Duwell captured All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on Friday. Duwell smashed her own school record by over 12 seconds in the process clocking a time of 15 minutes, 59.23 seconds to claim her first track national accolade.
Iowa State’s Lisa Koll took the race out a fast pace and won with a time of 15:39.65, over 11 seconds her nearest competitor. Duwell ran a disciplined race, keeping her own pace, while the field chased Koll. With eight laps to go, Duwell began to move her way up through the field.
“Megan ran the perfect race,” said Golden Gopher distance coach Gary Wilson. “With a large field on a small track there is a lot that can go wrong early when there is a large pack. We decided to just wait until the race thinned out to make our move. When Koll took it out so fast, that really fit into our plan. I’m very proud of Megan.”
The Golden Gophers have two pole vaulters, Alicia Rue and Samantha Sonnenberg, who are set to compete on Saturday.
