Gophers Take Third at Northern Migration

The University of Minnesota women's golf team was in contention to take home the team title all week at the Northern Migration Invite but finished third, just three strokes shy of the University of Texas-San Antonio, with a three day total of 898. The University of Idaho finished second with a score of 896.
The Gophers ended the fall schedule by finishing in a tie for 14th place at the Las Vegas Invitational but have opened the spring with three straight top-five finishes. Also, Minnesota has finished each spring tournament in the 890's, the first time in the history of the program that the Gophers have recorded sub-900 scores in three straight tournaments.
Minnesota was led by junior Teresa Puga, who garnered her fourth top-five finish of the season by finishing in a tie for third place. Her final score of 221 is her third lowest score of the season.
Fellow junior Samantha Sommers established the best performance of her career, as she concluded the invite with a career-low score of 224 to finish in a tie for 10th place, also a career-best. The one-under par 71 Sommers carded in the second round was also a career low.
True freshman Jackie Shepherd tallied her best performance of the invite with a two-over par 74 to finish in a tie for 19th place with a score of 227. It was her second top-20 performance of her initial collegiate campaign. Michele Edlin and Mary Narzisi each carded 54-hole scores of 231 to finish in a tie for 29th place.
The Gophers will be back on the course March 22-23 at the Pinehurst Challenge in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The entire tournament can be followed live at www.golfstat.com.
