Minnesota Falls to Samford 14-9

The Minnesota baseball team (6-12) dropped a 14-9 decision to Samford (10-8) at John L. Griffin Field on Friday, Mar. 19.

Minnesota was led offensively by AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) who went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run. Senior Kyle Knudson (Maple Grove, Minn.) was also 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and a stolen base, while junior Michael Kvasnicka (Lakeville, Minn.) went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.

Troy Larson (Maplewood, Minn.) finished 2-for-4 with two runs, while Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.) was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs and an RBI.

Minnesota starter Seth Rosin (Shoreview, Minn.) took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season, as he gave up eight hits, eight earned runs, walked two and struck out a batter in 5.1 innings.

The Golden Gophers got to Samford starter Jonathan Stephens for nine hits and eight runs in four innings of work. Stephens took a no-decision, but Andrew Jones and Lex Rutledge combined for five solid innings of relief to hold the Minnesota offense at bay. Jones pitched three scoreless innings, giving up six hits, one unearned run, one walk and one strike out. He picked up the win to move to 3-1, while Rutledge entered the game with an 11-8 lead and pitched two shutout innings to pick up his fifth save of the season.

Samford jumped on the board right away with three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead highlighted by an RBI single by Stephen Ballard.

Minnesota cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Knudson and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.). The Bulldogs responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-2, highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of Wayne Miller.

The Golden Gophers answered by exploding for six runs in the top of the fifth to take an 8-6 lead. Pettersen delivered a two-run double to cut the Samford lead to 6-4. Puhl and Knudson followed with a pair of RBI doubles to tie the game at 6-6. Puhl scored on the Knudson double on a throwing error by the left fielder to give Minnesota its first lead of the night at 7-6. JT Canakes (Eden Prairie, Minn.) put the Golden Gophers ahead 8-6 with an RBI fielder's choice ground out.

Minnesota's lead did not last long, after David Schulze delivered a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 8-8. In the top of the sixth, Ballard put the Bulldogs back ahead at 9-8 with an RBI double. Schulze added an RBI single to give Samford a 10-8 lead.

Samford tacked on a single run in the seventh to make it 11-8, but Kvasnicka had an RBI ground in the top of the eighth on a ground out to make it 11-9. The Bulldogs tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to move it to the final tally of 14-9.

The Bulldogs were led by Miller who went 4-for-6 with a home run, three runs and three RBI. Ballard also reached base four times, and was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBI. Allison was also 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI.

Minnesota will face Samford on Saturday, Mar. 20 at 1 p.m. and Sunday, Mar. 21 at 12 p.m. Both games can be heard live in the Gold Zone. Saturday's game will also be on KLBB (1220 AM).
