The Minnesota men’s track & field team opened its outdoor season by winning three event titles at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., this weekend. Arizona State hosted the non-scoring meet that featured over 30 schools competing.
David Pachuta led the Golden Gophers’ performance on the track winning the 800-meter run in a time of 1 minute, 50.52 seconds. Minnesota’s 4x400-meter relay also won gold with John Holton, Kevin Bradley, Joe McFarland and Mike Shelendich running a time of 3:14.12. Holton (48.00) and Bradley (48.23) turned in second and third-place finishes, respectively in the 400-meter dash.
Ben Peterson captured the lone title in the field events winning the pole vault with a height of 17 feet, 3/4 inches. Brock Spandl was third in the event at 16-8 3/4.
Redshirt freshman thrower Micah Hegerle was impressive in his first outdoor competition. Hegerle placed fourth in both the hammer throw and the discus. His effort of 192-11 in the hammer throw ranks as the sixth-best throw in Gopher history. He landed a throw of 170-10 in the discus.
Other top three finishers for the Gophers were Matt Clauer, who finished second in the high jump (6-6 3/4), Raymond Blackledge, who placed third in the triple jump (48-6 1/4) and the 4x100-meter relay (41.49) of Sean King, Cameron Boy, Ryan Todhunter and Oladipo Fagbemi.
