The University of Minnesota women's golf team entered this week's Pinehurst Invitational with three-straight top-three finishes; a second place finish to conclude the fall season and a runner-up and third place finish to start the spring season. The Gophers are in great shape to keep the streak intact, as they sit in a tie for sixth place after two rounds at Pinehurst #6.

The Gophers are only four shots out of second place, the position currently held by Campbell University and the University of Maryland. Florida State has a comfortable 18-shot lead with only 18 holes remaining.

Minnesota opened the invitational with a combined score of 304 but countered with a 295 in the afternoon session, which is currently the best score carded by a team not named the Seminoles. FSU opened with rounds of 287 and 290.

Junior Teresa Puga is the main reason why Minnesota is playing its best golf in the history of the program. The A Coruña, Spain native has been in the lineup in all seven of the team's tournaments this season, leads the team in stroke average and has four top-10 finishes on the season. Three of those have occurred in successive tournaments, and after two rounds at Pinehurst, she has put herself in contention to make it a fifth and fourth, respectively.

Puga, who is in a tie for 15th place, opened with a 77 in the morning but rebounded to card a 72 in the afternoon and is only seven shots out of second. Mary Narzisi is also in a tie for 15th after she turned in an identical 77-72 (149). Jackie Shepherd is gunning for the third top-20 finish of her freshman campaign after posting scores of 75-76 (151), She is in a tie for 25th place.

Samantha Sommers, coming off the best tournament of her career at the Northern Migration Invite, posted scores of 80 and 75 (155) and is in a tie for 48th place with teammate Michele Edlin (75-80). Tori Stock, a freshman from Woodstock, Ill., carded consecutive rounds of 80 and is in a tie for 67th place. She is playing the event as an individual.

The third and final round of the Pinehurst Invitational is scheduled to get underway at 8:00 a.m. Central.
