Minnesota Falls to NDSU 7-3

The Minnesota baseball team (6-14) dropped a 7-3 decision to North Dakota State (7-9) at the Metrodome on Tuesday, Mar. 23.

Minnesota was led by sophomore AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) who went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Kyle Knudson (Maple Grove, Minn.) also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 and extending his hitting streak to nine games. Troy Larson (Maplewood, Minn.) also extended his hitting streak to nine games, as he went 1-for-4 with an RBI, while Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) finished 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

Freshman Andy Henkemeyer (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) went 1-for-3 with a run and his first career double. Nick O'Shea (Blaine, Minn.) also went 1-for-4 with a run in the game. Redshirt freshman Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.) was 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.

Sophomore Austin Lubinsky (LaCrosse, Wis.) started and took a loss to fall to 0-1, as he gave up six hits and three runs in 2.2 innings. Junior Luke Rasmussen (Northfield, Minn.) pitched 3.1 innings, and gave up three hits and two unearned runs in relief. Cullen Sexton (Plover, Wis.) pitched two shutout innings for Minnesota on the night.

North Dakota State starter Kyle Kingsley picked up the win to move to 3-0, as he gave up nine hits, three runs and struck out three batters in 6.1 innings. Alex Chaput pitched 1.2 shutout innings, and Anthony Kliniske closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Bison got on the board first with a single run in the top of the first when Zach Wentz delivered a two-out solo home run to right center field to make it 1-0.

Minnesota came right back with a single run in the bottom of the second when Larson delivered an RBI single to plate Larson to tie it at 1-1.

Tim Jallen hit North Dakota State's second homer of the night to make it 2-1 in the top of the third. Wentz plated Justin Kline with an RBI single to give the Bison a 3-1 lead.

The Bison pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the fifth to make it 5-1. Jallen led off with a single, and came around to score when Kline's attempted a sacrifice bunt was thrown away into left field. Eric Nutzhorn brought Kline home with an RBI single through the drawn-in infield to put North Dakota State ahead 5-1.

North Dakota State added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to move the score to 7-1. The Golden Gophers responded in the bottom of the seventh with their best offensive threat of the night. Henkemeyer led off the inning with a double, and scored on a one-out RBI single by Pettersen to make it 7-2.

Geason followed with an RBI double to bring home Pettersen to make it 7-3. Michael Kvasnicka (Lakeville, Minn.) drew a walk to make it first and second with one out, but Chaput got Knudson to ground into an inning-ending double play.

North Dakota State was led by Jallen who went 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs. Went was also 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Kline finished 2-for-5 with a double and two runs, while Nutzhorn was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Minnesota left nine men on base on the night, marking the 10th time this season the Golden Gophers have stranded nine or more baserunners.

The Golden Gophers will finish the abbreviated two-game series against the Bison on Wednesday, Mar. 24 at 3:05 p.m. That game is available on live video and audio in the Gold Zone.
