Minnesota Registers Second Straight Runner-Up Finish

The Golden Gophers shot a final round 298 in tough weather conditions Sunday to finish alone in second place with a three round score of 43-over 895 (296-301-298). Minnesota finished in second place for the second straight tournament and are headed in the right direction for the spring season. Michigan won the Rio Verde Invitational by 14 shots over the Gophers with a three round score of 881.
"The team played well especially under the weather conditions today," Associate Head Coach Kristine Wessinger said. "They were able to focus on what they could control and didn't let the weather affect their play."
Minnesota was paced by the consistent play of juniors Michele Edlin and Teresa Puga. Edlin finished in a tie for third place at seven-over 220 (71-75-74).
"She had a great tournament and is continually making improvements," Wessinger said of Edlin. "She is getting better as she gains experience."
Puga registered her second straight top-10 finish for Minnesota. Her three round score of 223 (74-73-76) was good enough for a tie for seventh place. The Gophers' best score of the day came from junior Samantha Sommers. Her third round 73 and overall score of 229 (73-83-73) left her in a tie for 15th. Also contributing for the Gophers over the weekend was junior Mary Narzisi (78-76-82--236) and freshman Jackie Shepherd (85-77-75--237). Narzisi and Shepherd finished in a tie for 43rd and 48th respectively.
Michigan's Ashley Bauer provided a wire-to-wire finish to take medalist honors. Her impressive score of four-under 209 (68-68-73) is a new tournament record for lowest three round total. Michigan's nine stroke margin of victory is also the largest in tournament history.
The Gophers will travel back to the Phoenix area for the 2010 Northern Migration Invitational starting on Monday, March 15th and finishing on March 17th.
