Gophers Go West for Varsity Action
4/14/2010 12:00:00 AM | Rowing
The Minnesota varsity rowing program will compete at the Lake Natoma Invite in Gold River, Calif., Saturday and Sunday. The Golden Gophers will travel the First Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and the Varsity Four boats to the competition. The morning sessions begin at 8 a.m. (PT) with the Saturday afternoon session starting at 3 p.m.
The Field
The University of Minnesota will compete against some tough competition this weekend. No. 2 California and Sacramento State will be co-hosts of the event. Along with the host institutions, No. 3 Stanford, No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 14 Washington State, No. 19 Tennessee, Louisville and Texas will also compete at the event.
Last Year at the Invite
Minnesota competed in the two-day Lake Natoma Invitational last year as well. California, Stanford and Wisconsin were in one group, while Minnesota competed against Tennessee and UCLA in the second group, and Texas, Sacramento State and Central Florida were in the third group. Although the Gophers and UCLA tied for first in their group, the Bruins earned the tie-breaker based off their first-place finish in the First Varsity Eight competition. Minnesota, however, was the most consistent of the three teams in the group, winning two of the three events over the Bruins and the Lady Vols.
Up Next
Minnesota will host its only home event of the spring season as the Gophers welcome Kansas to town, April 24 at Lake Phalen. The Gophers and Jayhawks are scheduled to compete at 10 a.m. (weather permitting).
