Kansas Race Moved to Mississippi River

The University of Minnesota rowing team has changed the location of its Saturday 10 a.m. home meet against Kansas. Instead of holding the race at Lake Phalen in St. Paul, Minn., the Golden Gophers will host the Jayhawks on the Mississippi River and the University Boathouse. The facility is located in the East River Flats Park along River Parkway.
Both Kansas and Minnesota will launch its boats from the boathouse and will race 2000 meters. The start will be at the Interstate 94 bridge toward Lake Street. The races can be viewed along the bike paths that runs through the East River Flats Park. Races will be held in 15-minute intervals. The order of the race will be the Third Varsity Eight (10 a.m.), the First Varsity Eight (10:15), Second Novice Eight (10:30), First Novice Eight (10:45), Second Varsity Four (11), First Varsity Four (11:15) and the Second Varsity Eight will conclude the competition (11:30).
Along with moving the dual race to the Mississippi River, the Gophers will also hold a shell dedication in honor of their former captain, Cheryl Wick, who passed away in July. A native of Rochester, Minn., Wick was a member of the Gopher varsity program from 2003-07 and a part of the Gophers’ NCAA teams. While at Minnesota, Wick rowed with the Gophers’ top boat (First Varsity Eight) for three seasons and was a member of the Second Varsity Eight in 2003-04. During her tenure, Wick was an All-Central Region First Team selection in 2005 and 2007. A two-year captain, Wick was also an all-conference selection. A first-team All-Big Ten choice in 2007, Wick led the Gophers to a Big Ten Conference title that same year, while earning second-team honors in 2005-06.
