Minnesota Falls to Indiana 7-2

The Minnesota baseball team (15-24, 5-6) dropped the second game of the series to Indiana (20-17, 5-6) 7-2 at the Metrodome on Saturday, Apr. 25.

Minnesota was led by Kyle Knudson (Maple Grove, Minn.) who reached base twice, and was 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. It was Knudson's third home run of the season, all of which have come in Big Ten play. Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) also went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.) went 1-for-4 with a run, and Troy Larson (Maplewood, Minn.) had the other hit for the Gophers as he went 1-for-4. Michael Kvasnicka (Lakeville, Minn.) also reached base twice on a pair of walks in the game.

The Minnesota offense scored two runs and had four hits in the first two innings, but did not collect a hit in the final seven innings of the game.

Golden Gopher starter TJ Oakes (Jordan, Minn.) pitched 6.1 innings, gave up nine hits, five runs, walked one and struck out five. Luke Rasmussen (Northfield, Minn.) walked a pair of batters in one third of an inning, and Billy Soule (Hamel, Minn.) pitched the final 2.1 innings, giving up four hits, two runs, walking one and striking out three batters.

Hoosier starter Jonny Hoffman picked up the win to move to 2-1, as he gave up four hits, two runs, walked two and struck out six batters. Walker Stadler picked up the save, as he pitched 3.1 shutout innings to close out the game.

Indiana got on the board first in the top of the second when Alex Dickerson crushed a solo homer to the upper deck in right field to make it 1-0.

Minnesota got a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Knudson led off the inning by crushing a solo home run to left field to tie the game at 1-1. Puhl singled with one out and came around to score on an RBI double by Geason to give the Golden Gophers a 2-1 lead.

Brian Ritz led off the top of the third with a solo home run to right center field to tie the game at 2-2. Micah Johnson singled with one out, and moved to third on a two-out single by Jarrod Sabourin. Dickerson plated Johnson with an RBI single to give the Hoosiers the lead back at 3-2.

Indiana added a single run in the top of the sixth to make it 4-2. Dickerson led off with a walk, moved to second on a single by Michael Earley, and scored on an RBI double by Josh Lyon to make it a two-run Hoosier lead. Earley ended up getting tagged out at the plate when Oakes threw a pitch by Knudson by covered home to get Earley trying to score. Oakes battled back to strike out the next two hitters to get out of the inning without further damage.

Dickerson plated another run for the Hoosiers on a fielder's choice RBI ground out that plated Johnson in the top of the seventh. Indiana added a pair of runs in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Brian Lambert and an RBI double by Dylan Swift

Indiana was led by Dickerson who went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and three RBI. Johnson also reached base three times, and was 2-for-3 with two runs. Swift was also 2-for-4 with a run, a double and an RBI, while Lyon finished 2-for-5 with two doubles, a run and an RBI.

Minnesota and Indiana will wrap up the series on Sunday, Apr. 26 at 1:05 p.m. That game can be seen on the Big Ten Network and can be heard on KLBB (1220 AM).
