Gearing Up for Double Duals
The University of Minnesota rowing team will be in full force as both the varsity and novice teams head down to Iowa City, Iowa, to compete in the Big Ten Double Duals on Lake McBride Saturday. Competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and continue through 3:15 p.m. The double duals include host Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Louisville.
On the Schedule
The races will be broken up between the morning and afternoon sessions. Kicking off the event at 9 a.m. is the Second Novice Eight with Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota all competeing. The Gophers' First Varsity Eight will compete against Iowa at 11 a.m. Similar to the morning session, the afternoon session will also start with the 2N8 as Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa will all compete. The Gophers' 1V8 will compete against Louisville at 3:15 to close the competition. A full schedule is included in this news story.
Last Year at Double Duals
Minnesota competed at the Double Duals last year in Columbus, Ohio. The Gophers's No. 18 1V8 defeated Indiana in the morning session, but fell to No. 8 Brown and ahead of Notre Dame in the afternoon. The 2V8 dropped both races, while the First and Second Varsity Fours split its action.
Last Action
The Gophers' varsity boats will be in their first action since the Tennessee dual (March 20), while the novice team competed two weeks ago in the San Diego Crew Classic. Against Tennessee, the Gophers fell in the First and Second Varsity Eight, but earned wins in the Varsity Four events. For the Novice boats, the Gophers won their Second Novice Eight race, while the 1N8 made it to the Grand Finals.
On the Docket
After some time off, the Gophers will now compete the next three weekends in preparation for the Big Ten Championships (5/1). The Gophers' Varsity team will compete at the Lake Natoma Invite, April 17-18 in Gold River, Calif. Minnesota hosts Kansas (4/24) on Lake Phalen and then travel to the Big Ten Championships, hosted by defending champions, Michigan State, in East Lansing, Mich.
