Hegerle Wins Hammer With Big Ten-Leading Effort

Golden Gopher redshirt freshman Micah Hegerle won the hammer throw at the Musco Twilight Meet in Iowa City, Iowa, on Saturday evening with a personal-best effort of 211 feet, 5 inches. The mark is the best in the Big Ten this season and ranked second all-time in Minnesota history. Hegerle added a second-place showing in the discus with a throw of 175-5, just an inch of his personal best in that event.
Senior Raymond Blackledge was the only other Gopher to win an event title. Blackledge won the triple jump with a distance of 47-11.
The Gophers did tally several top-three finishes, many of them with personal-best performances. Paul Hoplin leads the list with his second-place finish in the javelin where he sailed a throw of 224-6, the second-longest throw in Minnesota history. Freshman Oladipo Fagbemi was second in the 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 21.44 seconds and third in the long jump with a leap of 23-4 1/2.
Mike Shelendich finished second in the 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 1:51.06, while Luke Silovich ran a season-best time of 14.56 to place second in the 110-meter high hurdles. Other runner-up finishes were turned in by Trey Davis in the shot put with a throw of 55-11 1/4 and Mike McFarland in the 5,000-meter run in 14:53.95.
Tyler Kleinhuizen tallied a pair of third-place finishes in the hammer and discus. His throw of 185-0 in the hammer was a personal best. He landed a throw of 168-8 in the discus.
Sean King ran his best time in the 100-meter dash (10.57) in placing third. John Holton was also third in the 400-meter dash in 48.05.
