University of Minnesota senior Ben Pisani opened with a one-over 71 in the first round of the NCAA Central Region Golf Tournament Thursday at Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. Pisani's 71 puts him in an eight-player tie for 21st place.
Pisani started his round with a birdie on the par four first hole and finished his first nine holes with a one-under 34. He concluded his second nine with a two-over 37 with bogeys on holes 12 and 18.
A native of Brisbane, Australia, Pisani led the Gophers in the fall and spring seasons in stroke average at 70.14 and 73.78, respectively. His combined stroke average of 72.24 this season is the fifth-lowest in the history of Minnesota golf and is his lowest in the four seasons he has been at the U.
Pisani, a 2010 First Team All-Big Ten performer, finished the regular season having posted five top-10 and eight top-20 finishes in 11 attempts, including a runner-up finish at the 2009 Gopher Invitational.
The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals. The finals will be conducted June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tennessee, hosted by The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Pisani will tee off at 9:20 a.m. Central on Friday and can be followed live at www.golfstat.com. Other pertinent tournament information can be located on Notre Dame's tournament page.
