University of Minnesota senior golfer Donald Constable won the 2010 North & South Amateur Championship last week in Pinehurst, N.C.
In the championship 36-hole match, Constable took a commanding 8-up lead on SMU's Kelly Kraft through 25 holes and ended up with a 4-and-3 victory to become Minnesota's first champion at the prestigious event. Constable adds his name to an elite list of past champions of the North & South including Jack Nicklaus, Corey Pavin, Curtis Strange, Hal Sutton and Davis Love III. The tournament has been held annually since 1901 on Pinehurst #2. Participants are chosen based upon their performance in national amateur championships and overall competitive record.
Constable, who was seeded 31st in the match play championship field of 64 players, posted wins over seventh-seeded Lee Bedford in the quarterfinals and second-seeded Patrick Reed – who helped lead Augusta State to an NCAA Championship last month – in the Round of 32.
Constable played in five tournaments for the Gophers as a junior in the spring of 2010 following a transfer from Texas. He posted a stroke average of 74.81, the second-best on the team. He was Minnesota's top finisher at the Big Ten Championships in May with a 16th place finish.
