Former Minnesota team doctor V. George Nagobads was elected to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame yesterday. Nagobads, who was Minnesota's team physician for 34 years, was part of a five-person class that included Jeremy Roenick, Kevin Hatcher, Derian Hatcher and former USA Hockey director of national teams Art Berglund. The induction ceremony is Oct. 21 in Buffalo, N.Y.

Nagobads, 88, was born in Latvia and moved to the United States in 1952 to begin his surgical residency at the University of Minnesota's Medical Center. He began serving as the team physician in 1958 and held the position until his retirement in 1992. Nagobads was part of three NCAA Division I national championship teams and the program unveiled the Dr. V. George Nagobads Unsung Hero Award in 1978 to honor him. Junior Jacob Cepis received the award last year.

Nagobads was also an integral part of USA Hockey, as he was the team physician for the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team in 1968, 1972, 1980, 1984 and 1988. He was the team doctor for 15 U.S. Men's National Teams and was the physician for the first-ever U.S. Women's National Team that took silver at the 1990 IIHF World Women's Championship.
