The University of Minnesota women’s track & field team, with over 90 student-athletes on the roster, is the largest team in the nation. These Golden Gophers combined for an impressive 3.39 team cumulative grade point average in 2009-10 to rank among the top 25 in the country. The U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) awarded All-Academic Status to 151 NCAA Division I teams who earned a 3.0 team GPA or higher. Minnesota’s 3.39 GPA was the best of the eight Big Ten Conference schools honored.
In addition to the team honor, 13 Gophers were awarded USTFCCCA Track & Field All-Academic Honors: Gabriele Anderson, Jamie Dittmar, Megan Duwell, Amy Laskowske, Felicitas Mensing, Chimerem Okoroji, Becca Pilkerton, Kathryn Ritter, Alicia Rue, Kelly Stalpes, Mallory Van Ness, Todea-Kay Willis and Elizabeth Yetzer. Ritter and Yetzer were among an elite group of 28 honorees with perfect 4.0 GPAs.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or participated in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships (including preliminary rounds) in their respective event.
“Every year we push ourselves to be the best we can be both in our athletic and academic performance,” said Golden Gopher head coach Matt Bingle. “Our young women have a lot to be proud of. To have a team with close to 100 athletes combine for such an impressive team GPA is just amazing.”
