Minnesota Finishes Seventh at Gopher Invite

The University of Minnesota men's golf team opened its season this week by hosting 10 other teams in the sixth annual Gopher Invitational at Spring Hill Golf Club in Wayzata. The Gophers combined to card rounds of 292, 300 and finished with a 310 Monday for a 54-hole score of 902 (+38). Minnesota finished seventh, two shots shy of sixth place Iowa.
Sophomore Erik Van Rooyen posted the round of the day for the Gophers with a final round 76. He finished alone in 16th place. Senior Donald Constable carded rounds of 71-71-79 for the week to finish in a tie for 13th place. Sophomore Shang Zhi finished in a tie for 33rd place while David Haley Jr. finished in a tie for 39th and Tim Peterzen in a tie for 53rd place.
Gopher senior Cameron White, sophomore Robert Bell and freshmen Garrett Fotu and Jon Trasamar played the event unattached. White finished alone in 55th place while Bell, Trasamar and Fotu finished in a tie for 56th, 58th and a tie for 59th place, respectively.
Louisiana State, also the Gopher Invitational team champion in 2008, became the first repeat winner in the history of the event by shooting a 54-hole score of 869 (301-281-287) to defeat Kent State by 11 strokes. Arkansas (889) finished third by one stroke over Charlotte (890) and three shots over fifth place Lamar (892).
Kent State's John Hahn took home medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 206 to win by six strokes over Arkansas' Sebastian Cappelen. LSU's Clayton Rotz carded a third round 66, the lowest round of the invite, to finish third.
The Gophers are off until Sept. 26-27 when they will travel to Chicago to take part in the Windon Invitational.
