Gophers in Seventh at Windon Memorial Classic

Led by senior Donald Constable who finished runner up by one stroke to medalist Albin Choi of NC State, Minnesota recorded a 292 on Monday to earn sixth place at the Rod Myers Invitational in Durham, N.C. The Gophers carded rounds of 288, 294, and 292 respectively for a 54-hole total of 874 in the 12 team tournament hosted by Duke University.
Constable fired a two under-par 70 in the final round to earn a career best second place finish. The team captain posted a three under-par 69 in the opening round and sat in a tie for eighth place heading into the final 18 holes after a second round 73. His 54-hole total of 212 (-4) is also a career low.
Sophomore Erik Van Rooyen was the next best Gopher, finishing in a tie for 30th place (220) after a shooting an even par 72 in the final round. Freshman David Haley also recorded a career best finish, ending in 32nd place finish (221) with a one under-par 71 on Monday.
Sophomore Shang Zhi finished in a tie for 55th at 227, and fellow sophomore John Trasamar registered a 59th place finish in his first event of the season with a 54-hole total of 230.
Choi pared the final hole to finish at five under, besting Constable, Michael Whitehead of Rice, and Brad Hopfinger of winner Iowa by one stroke.
Iowa lead each round of the tournament and held on to win the championship with a 13 under par 581. North Carolina State finished five back in second with an 856 and Charlotte recorded an 860 to earn third. Michigan claimed fourth with an 861, while tournament host Duke (866) finished one shot ahead of the Gophers in fifth.
Minnesota will travel next to Fairfax, Cal. to take part in the Cal Berkley Invitational on October 18th.
