Okoroji Wins Two Events at Minnesota Open

Minnesota junior Chimerem Okoroji sprinted to titles in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes to highlight the Golden Gopher women’s track & field team’s performance on Saturday at the Minnesota Open.

Okoroji captured the win in the 60 meters with a career-best time of 7.51 seconds, a time that ranks as the fourth-fastest in Gopher history. She added a first-place finish in the 200 meters in a time of 25.13 seconds.

The Gophers collected four other titles on the track. Alena Brooks won the 400-meter dash in 55.30 seconds, while freshman Katie Hill captured the 600-meter dash in 1:33.16. Brooks and Hill, along with Adrienne Thomas and Kelly Stalpes ran to the title in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:51.65. Nikki Swenson added the title in the 3,000 meters in a time of 10:03.56.

Minnesota won titles in three field events. Todea-Kay Willis landed a leap of 18-9 1/4 to win the long jump. Kelsey Joson won the triple jump with an effort of 36-7, while Natalie Devine cleared 5-5 to capture the high jump title.

The Gophers host the Jack Johnson Classic on Jan. 21-22.
