Gophers Lead After Day One of Jack Johnson Classic

Redshirt freshman Laura Docherty won the 5,000-meter run to highlight the first day of competition as Minnesota hosted the Jack Johnson Classic at the University Fieldhouse. Docherty clocked a time of 17 minutes, 36.16 seconds to win by over eight seconds.

The Gophers scored 84 points after four events to take the lead in the team standings in the nine-team field. South Florida is second with 50.

Minnesota claimed four of the top five places in the 5,000 meters. In addition to Docherty’s winning effort, Annie Talaikowski was third in 17:56.67, Andrea Redinger fourth in 18:04.11 and Kayla Wagner fifth in 18:09.48.

One other event was contested on the track in the first day of the meet, the 200-meter dash. Alena Brooks finished second in the event with a career-best time of 24.94 seconds, just a hundredth of a second off the Gophers’ top-10 list in the event. Nyoka Giles was fifth in a time of 25:21.

The Gophers received second and third-place finishes in the long jump from Todea-Kay Willis and Adrienne Thomas, respectively. Willis landed a jump of 18-6, while Thomas’ best was 18-5.

Samantha Sonnenberg tied for second in the pole vault. Sonnenberg cleared a season-best height of 13-5 1/4.

Competition continues on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
