MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's track and field team hosts the Snowshoe Open on Friday at the University Fieldhouse to close the indoor home regular season schedule. The No. 20 Gophers will have 27 entries in uniform on Friday, including the No. 1 ranked weight thrower in the NCAA, Anthonett Nabwe.

LAST TIME OUT
For the first time in seven years, there is a new Big Ten weight throw all-time record holder after Anthonett Nabwe set a lifetime best at the Tyson Invitational at Randal Tyson Track Center on February 13.

Nabwe's record-breaking toss of 24.67m (80-11 1/4) came on attempt five of the pro-level competition that saw the Liberian finish as the meet's runner-up to now-professional, and the No. 3 all-time NCAA weight thrower, Jalani Davis (Ole Miss). Then a day later on the track Zoie Dundon secured her first program record in the indoor mile. Dundon's 4:31.92 broke a two-week-old record that was held by teammate Isabelle Schmitzwho's 4:34.67 came at the Meyo Invite on January 31.

NABWE COLLECTS NINTH BIG TEN WEEKLY HONOR
For the third time this season redshirt junior Anthonett Nabwe earned the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week honor, the conference office announced on February 18. The recognition is the ninth of the Liberian's Gopher career between indoor and outdoor and comes on the heels of her Big Ten record weight throw performance in Fayetteville, Ark., the same location as the 2026 NCAA Indoor Championships in March.

The two-time reigning Big Ten champion added another page to her legacy when she launched her 20-pound implement 24.67m (80-11 1/4) at the Tyson Invitational. The throw broke the previous Big Ten weight throw record that was held by Olympian Sade Olatoye (Ohio St.) which had held since 2019. Nabwe's toss is the best by any collegiate student-athlete in two years (Jalani Davis, Ole Miss) and is a top 15 throw in the world this year. Nabwe's 24.67m (80-11 1/4) goes down as the No. 6 all-time weight throw in NCAA history, per USTFCCCA, and broke 2018 NCAA weight throw champion Kaitlyn Long's school record. In Big Ten weight throw history Nabwe holds three of the top 10 all-time throws while University of Minnesota throwers own eight of the top 10 throws between Nabwe, Long and Shelby Frank.

MINNESOTA IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
The University of Minnesota women's track and field team moved up to No. 20 in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national rankings, the organization announced on February 17. That season Minnesota went on to finish 24th as a team at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.

The Maroon and Gold also had four different events that were ranked inside the nation's top 20 in the latest Event Squad rankings, which measures the cumulative depth of a team's top athletes in specific disciplines. Minnesota's top event is the No. 2 ranked quartet of Nabwe, Hadley Streit, Rejoice Agbewodie and Ella Pavlovich (21.46m average). Minnesota's indoor mile group is 18th nationally while the 5000m group of Ali Weimer, Izzy Roemer, Taylor Isabel and Charlotte Lange slot in at No. 20. Lastly Minnesota's shot put group is also No. 20 nationally with Nabwe leading the way with a season-best of 17.18m (56-4 1/2).
